Where youth go, mentors are sure to follow . . . and we're banking on it!

Mi Animo Prevention

At the San Luis Valley Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center, drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention is a growing program. Within those prevention categories is the Mi Animo Prevention (mentoring) program. The staff recognizes that mentoring is key to the successful reduction of these habits.

Mentoring a young person is a way to make a difference in our local communities. Our mentors report a huge increase in their "fun" quotients! Imagine with us for a moment our Valley stocked piled with children and youth reaching for their dreams and in the background an adults friend saying "You can do it!"

Our prevention work includes

Sí Se Puede--Sí Se Puede is a mentoring program targeting 8-18 year olds in Conejos County Working with the Conejos County Department of Social Services. Anna Lee Vargas (Pictured) provides not only mentoring for 17 enrolled youth, but also anger management and suicide prevention.

Partnering with schools & faith based organizations-- Mi Animo Prevention's modules and activities are forming partnerships with local churches by building a larger mentor base and by providing expressive but faith-based creations through art activities. Pictured are Mi Animo youth and Sacred Hearth Church youth collaborating on murals for the youth lounge.

Suicide, Substance Abuse, and Violence Education--SSAVE is a Valley coalition aimed at preventing suicide. Professionals and teens from are youth coalitions make up the dynamic group. Members have received Yellow Ribbon training. SSAVE-News, the coalition's newsletter is now online. Links for SEADS, US and others are comming soon.
